Middlesex Blood Drive

Middlesex Blood DriveThis Sunday, May 20th, the Middlesex Boro Rescue Squad will be holding a blood drive for the Red Cross.  From 9:30am to 3:30pm, representatives from the Red Cross will be on hand at 1400 Mountain Blvd in Middlesex, NJ to take your blood donation.  While walk-ins are always welcome, you can schedule an appointment to donate your blood by visiting the Red Cross site here.

Every year, thousands of lives are saved by the selfless, simple act of giving blood, including those who live here in Middlesex and the surrounding burroughs.  Unfortunately, blood banks are always in need of this life-saving force.  All blood types are needed, but especially the universal Type O.  Every two seconds, an American citizen somewhere finds themselves in need of a blood transfusion, whether that be through surgery, an accident or even during chemotherapy.  In fact, a person involved in a car accident may require as much as 100 pints of blood.  Your single donation of three pints will most certainly help.

Before you donate to the Middlesex Blood Drive this Sunday, May 20th, please follow these tips to make it as easy as possible:

  • - Eat foods that are rich in iron, such as red meat, poultry, spinach, fish, iron-fortified cereal, raisins and beans, to increase the iron in your blood before donation.
  • - Sleep well the night before.
  • - Drink at least 16 oz of water before you donate (your body can dehydrate quickly, making it difficult to extract blood).
  • - Eat a good meal before you donate.  Avoid fatty foods before donating your blood, as this can bring back a false positive on test results run for infectious diseases up to several hours after eating foods high in fat.
  • - Bring your donor card, drivers license or two other forms of ID.  If you have never donated before, you can sign up at the Middlesex Boro Rescue Squad donation site as long as you have two forms of ID, one of which must include a picture.
  • - Wear short-sleeved or loose-sleeved shirts to allow easy access to your veins.
  • - Show the phlebotomist where you have had blood drawn successfully in the past to avoid the chances of them having to try to access your veins more than once.
  • - Relax.

Middlesex County Ranks High for Overall Health

Middlesex County Ranks High for Overall HealthMiddlesex County ranked high for overall health in the state of New Jersey in the latest annual County Health Rankings report.  This study is conducted by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Coming in sixth place for all the counties in New Jersey, Middlesex County moved up one spot from last year’s ranking.

Quality of health care, education, jobs, environment and individual behavior are some of the main areas focused on to determine the ranking of each county.  Middlesex County officials have taken this as a good sign that their efforts in educating the residents of the county in good public safety and health as well as providing access to quality health care are going in the right direction.  They pledge to continue making public health a priority to instill a positive quality of life for Middlesex County residents.

It’s great that Middlesex County has ranked high for overall health in the state.  What positive changes have you made in your life to increase your health?  What have you noticed that Middlesex County offers in terms of encouraging a healthy lifestyle?  We’d love to hear from you.
